The Batman: Arkham series from Rocksteady Studios is one of the highest-rated and top-selling superhero game franchises ever. It has been confirmed that Arkham Knight was the last installment, but Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has sanctioned a couple of spinoff games set in the same universe.
The first of these is Gotham Knights, which will be released in October this year. Despite the lack of Batman, players who loved the Arkham series are also likely to enjoy this one.
Certain Characters Like Mr. Freeze and the Penguin will Return
Gotham Knights take place in Gotham City after the demise of the Caped Crusader, but it will still feature some of the legendary characters that the Dark Knight battled during his crime-fighting career. This should appease fans who want to see a connection between the two games.
The strongest crossover supervillain that players will face is Mr. Freeze, a cryogenicist known for his genius-level intellect and scientific expertise. The last time gamers came up against the cool customer was in Arkham City way back in 2011, so they’ll be glad that he’s making an appearance in the new game.
Another familiar face in the new offering is the Penguin, known for being one of the city’s most ruthless mob bosses. This will help ground the game in Gotham lore and will please both fans of the comics and the old games. Aside from these two, the main antagonists will be the Court of Owls.
Game Focuses on Batman’s Protégés
In Gotham Knights, there’s no chance of Batman turning up. Instead, players take control of the characters that used to work alongside him at different times. These are Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, and Red Hood.
The aim of the game is to restore order to Gotham City after Batman’s demise. Following his passing, the criminals in the city have taken control and it has plunged into a state of lawlessness. The protagonists will also have to investigate the Dark Knight’s mysterious disappearance while coming up against the brainwashed assassins connected to the Court of Owls.
Each character has different special abilities, and players can choose between them for the various missions. This happens at the Belfry, where players can switch between the protagonists and prepare for missions.
Studio Responsible for Arkham Origins
This game isn’t from the main developers of the Arkham games, but it is from WB Games Montréal who made some significant contributions to that series. The studio was responsible for Batman: Arkham Origins in 2013, the title that provided the background for a few of the main villains from the series.
WB Games Montreal also made some of the expansion packs for Batman: Arkham Knight. These included the Red Hood Story Pack, the Harley Quinn Story Pack, Batgirl: A Matter of Family, and Scarecrow’s Nightmare Pack.
WB Games Montréal has pedigree when it comes to developing gritty Batman offerings in line with the Arkham games from Rocksteady Studios. Gotham Knights, therefore, is likely to appeal to players who relished those games.
